Chromebooks for Chemistry!

My students need these computers because I currently have none. Virtual labs are abundant and can help my students physically manipulate everything from atoms to cells.

My Students

Our school is a turnaround school that is part of CPS. We are a k-8 school that is a tight knit community. I teach all of the middle school students. My students are all low income, and all of my students receive a free or reduced lunch. Often, my students are parents themselves when they go home, because most of our parents work two jobs just to make ends meet. My students also have to deal with regular violence that has claimed the lives of friends and relatives. Amid all of this turmoil, my students are still curious, thoughtful, and insightful students. I teach science through inquiry, and my students want to know why things work. They want to explore and experiment, and explore by doing everything they can. My kids are voracious learners and never happy until they are certain they can explain something, and I want to give them the chance to explain and experience all of the sciences.

My Project

My science lab is currently bereft of any and all technology. With the boom in virtual labs, there are thousands of resources online that I can use with my kids. I am ready to have my students use the computers to change the DNA code and watch the proteins a cell makes change, or to manipulate carbon and oxygen atoms from a sugar molecule into carbon dioxide.

My students learn by being able to touch and manipulate things, and the computers allow students to interact with things that are so tiny they could never see and manipulate them.

These computers are a new way that my students can access and understand the content that we're covering. When I taught chemistry this year, my 8th graders struggled with the concept of balancing chemical equations and with how atoms formed bonds. The University of Colorado's PHeT simulations cover these exact misconceptions and would let my students explore the concept before they form misconceptions. A lot of my student's struggles came from preconceptions because they had no framework with which they could contextualize the information I had taught. Using these simulations allows students to put together an image of how something looks or works which they can then revise or refine based on what we've learned.
