Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach college credit environmental science at a Title I high school in Denver, CO. Resources are very limited and funding for a true 21st century education is almost non-existent. Despite these challenges, I could never dream of teaching anywhere else because I absolutely adore my students and the population I serve.
My students are some of the most driven and resilient people you will ever meet, but they encounter many unnecessary hurdles to their successes in education.
My student population regularly struggles with homelessness, poverty, gang violence, and food insecurity. In spite of all this, they are persevering and passionate individuals who love to debate, learn, and be agents of change not only in our school, but also in their communities and the world.
My Project
In addition to the many challenges my students face outside of the classroom, one of the biggest stumbling blocks IN our classroom is the inconsistent access to technology and chromebooks. Many of my students do not have computers at home to complete assignments for their college level course. I have had students whose only option was to use their cellphone to write essays or complete online assignments for my class. On top of that, we often cannot get access to computers when we need them because they are shared between multiple teachers.
With our own set of classroom computers we will be able to consistently access the best technology, models, and programs for learning about environmental science.
My school has limited resources when it comes to lab materials as well. These chromebooks will open the door to a wealth of activities, labs, and research projects my students will be able to finally engage in on a regular basis. Not only will these computers allow us to access more information in class, they will also help prepare my students for a true college experience. I plan to make these available to my students outside of class as well so that they may work on homework, writing papers, and completing college and scholarship applications. Even more exciting is the reduced environmental impact my classroom will have if I don't have to print every single thing because I can't access computers on a regular basis.
Right now I am only asking for 6 chromebooks due to the DonorsChoose limit. If this project is funded I will create another to hopefully finish supplying my classroom with 32 chromebooks and a cart. Regardless, 6 chromebooks will still make a difference in my classroom for the students who need them most.
