Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school lacks textbooks for our students. There is no way we can afford textbooks for all students. But if we can equip our classroom with a 1-1 ratio of computers then our students can access free online textbooks to all subjects! Textbooks apps, calculator apps, dictionary apps - any app!
Our school is located next to the Bronx jail where there is a daily line of inmates coming in and out.
On the other side of the street is the criminal courts where there is a daily line of criminal cases. The South Bronx is known more for poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, and failing schools than academic opportunities. However, our school five years ago started a debate team the only school in the South Bronx with a debate team. It has grown to nearly 100 students from grades 7th-12th. Their academic abilities range from special education to valedictorian. Their background ranges from abuse, mental institutionalization to perfect attendance. Their behavior ranges from regularly suspended to model student. But they are all united by their passion and love for learning, law, debate and all subjects. Unfortunately, they lack access to computers and technology. Online textbooks, ebooks, free digital resources and every other online resource is not available.
My Project
Our proposal is to provide a 1-1 classroom of technology so that all students can access the digital world of learning. This proposal is specific to etextbooks. Our school cannot afford regular textbooks for everyone. Even if we could - they are used very quickly, we can't provide for all subjects, and we always have a shortage. However, with ebooks our students can access all textbooks online. And not just for reading - but online assessments, online supplemental materials, online discussions, online research and an entire world of online knowledge! Gone are the days where a teacher has to buy a smartboard, class set of clickers, class set of computers, class set of notebooks, class set of worksheets - etc! Now with a computer and an infinite world of online apps - a student and teacher can access everything. The Google Chromebook offers a unique education marketplace of free apps designed for teachers and students from calculators to encyclopedias to online assessments.
Reading is the fundamental core of learning.
Our students should not be limited to what they read! Every book should be available for students. And a 1-1 classroom can guarantee that by allowing every student to access any material online. With a touch of a button our students can connect to a scientist. With a touch of a button our students can connect to an online field trip to see what they read. With a touch of a button our students can take a quiz on the reading. Thank you!
