Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school in Brooklyn, NY is a Title 1 school, meaning most of the student population qualifies for reduced price or free meals. A majority of my students either have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners.
Despite these challenges, my students are passionate about their learning, and are always gearing to ask questions in science no matter what obstacles are in their path to success.
From asking questions to researching and collaborating on science projects, my students amaze me day after day with their insights, and their drive to do better and to improve themselves via education.
My Project
My students know how to read and write, however, they don't know how to analyze text for logical arguments, or make conclusions using various pieces of evidence in a coherent manner. To help them reach these goals, I want to flip my STEAM classroom!
A flipped classroom has the students doing the basic work - reading, writing, vocabulary - at home, while class time is spent on higher level thinking and hands-on activities with the aid of the teacher.
Studies have confirmed that this model of teaching and learning makes a positive impact on the students' learning, and allows the students to do more constructive, inquiry-based learning in the class - instead of monotonous note-taking.
