Chromebooks for 21st Century Writing Success!

My students need eight Chromebooks to complete a half-class set, so that we can at least share one chromebook between two students, in my classes of 36 students.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school is a wonderfully productive learning environment, despite the lower income status (60% free or reduced price lunch program, 69% minority); our students excel in project-based learning, from robotics to 21st century journalism, to hydroponics, to community volunteerism, just to name a few!

My students are fascinated with the connection and repetition of historical events with current events when it comes to justice, human rights, and the American spirit!

Through my Master's in Learning and Technology, I have created an American History & Current Events Blog Project, integrating Language Arts, History, Current Events, and Technology to inspire students with real-life content as they learn research, reasoning, and writing skills to meet 21st century academic expectations. So often, the public underestimates the ingenuity, capability and aspirations of my 8th grade students because state test scores say they are underachieving, but real life is not a state test; life is an endless succession of personal projects requiring skills other than a multiple choice or short answer question. Chromebooks, Google Apps, and challenging real-life research and writing projects are the key to gaining the skills they will need for modern professional careers!

My Project

My students thrive when tackling research & writing projects using Chromebooks and Google apps for our American History & Current Events Blog Project. Currently, our school has only been able to purchase a class set of Chromebooks per department (i.e. Language Arts, Science, etc.) There are currently ten Language Arts teachers who struggle to reserve a class set in a timely manner to coincide with their class projects. This greatly limits when and for how long my students have access to a Chromebook; it actually prevents us from completing a significant amount of our blog project each year.

With at least a half-class set, one Chromebook for every two students to share as a team, we might actually be able to finish our year-long blog projects, in addition to more individual multi-media class presentations!

Students seem to morph into mature, aspiring researchers & writers when they have a Chromebook as a tool. It's an odd phenomena, how they moan, groan, and resist thinking and writing when using pencil and paper. I believe it has to do with the modern mode of expression being digital, and they want to participate like everyone else. It makes sense to provide the tools that they love to use, in order to get them to love what they can produce with those tools!
