My Students

Most of my students come to Berkeley for school each day after commuting by public transportation from Richmond or Oakland. Over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Nearly a quarter of the students are classified as English Learners. They are all looking for what they call a "typical high school experience."

Focused on Project Based Learning and Social Justice, our school is a place where students can take agency over their own education to confront a system that otherwise often fails them.

Our school is a small, urban school consisting of just under 400 students. Our students are known and have a voice; our teaching practice is rooted in love for our students and our community; we help each other get “unstuck;” and we serve our community through project-based learning. With students, families, teachers, and administration, we lead with Love, Grit, and Action.

My Project

In English class, my students practice their 21st century skills through blogging about their independent reading on my website, formatting essays, and practicing research. However, most of the work they do, they are doing on their smartphones (typing with their thumbs) or borrowing my laptop, staying late after school, or having to commute to the local library to gain access to a computer.

One of my students' greatest challenges is a lack of technology provided by the school, a problem that most severely affects low-income students, English Learners and students with special needs and educational accommodations.

While there is a computer lab in our school, it is used throughout the day for credit recovery and technology classes, meaning that the school as a whole is virtually without technology. The extra work that my students have to do to access technology means that some more privileged students with computers at home are at an advantage compared to those without, and my economically disadvantaged students become more educationally disadvantaged as well. Having just 3 Chromebooks available in the classroom at all times would allow my students to complete their assignments along with their peers, and my newcomer students and students with writing accommodations to be supported at the level they deserve to be. In short, this project would completely change the level of support my students have within the room, and ultimately affect their entire school experience.
