My students need 30 Chromebooks to create products and resources, i.e: academic blogs, wikis, ePortfolios, to utilize online resources, and to globalize the classroom.
21st Century Learning at our school means engaging students in interdisciplinary learning, cultivating a global classroom, engaging students as active, self-directed, reflective, and creative learners, and emphasizing problem-solving, collaboration and higher order thinking.
The teachers of 10th grade, cluster A, teach approximately 200 total students.
Our students are very high-achieving and motivated learners. We are an exam school in a large urban school district. Although our students are very bright, they often get discouraged because our school does not seem to get the resources that are made available to lower-performing schools.
My Project
Having 30 Samsung Chromebooks would change our students' curricular activities in a huge way! In Latin class, students read very challenging texts in Latin. Their task, after they have read the text, is to create a product that shows their comprehension of what they have read. Students answer: what does this text mean to you, why is it important, and what evidence do you have from the text to prove it. This product can take many forms. Some students have been blogging to show their work. Some would like to create a wiki space to keep all their analysis in one place.
Students connect what they are reading about in Latin class to modern history and culture, for example Pliny's letters about his seaside home and his first-hand account of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. In order to do this, they research the modern events and compare and contrast these to the ancient ones. If we had Chromebooks, students could do more during class while they are with their peers and their teachers.
This project would change so many students' school life.
Our school has a very limited supply of technology for its 1800 students. This set of Chromebooks would ensure that our 10th graders have the necessary tools to be the 21st century learners we want them to be.
