Margaret Fuller's words, “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader” really resonate with me. As a fourth grade language arts teacher, I am very aware of the research that documents the importance of being a reader to a student’s success both in school and throughout life.
J W Elementary School is a great elementary school!
We pride ourselves in being a very caring community. We are located in rural Virginia with a student population that is continuing to become more diverse. I would describe my students as hard workers that want to be successful and reach their dreams.
My Project
My experience has shown me that Chromebooks are an inexpensive tool that can assist students in providing them with more reading choices, opportunities to share, and collaborate with one another in reading. Adding even two more Chromebooks to my classroom will allow me to continue to better meet my students' reading needs. In reading, I will be working with students in small groups. One of the groups will be on Chromebooks and classroom computers. Students on the computers/Chromebooks will be able to choose reading materials from several magazine and book sites. In addition, Google Class and other websites will continue to be used by students to allow them to share and collaborate in reading. Finally, I will be exploring more reading initiatives this year as my resources grow.
Research has also shown that students are motivated to read when they are given materials on their reading level, choice of texts or books, opportunities to share thoughts about materials read, and the ability to collaborate with classmates (Richard L Allington).
I want my students to not only develop strong reading skills, but also continue their journey as life long readers. I believe this relatively inexpensive tool will greatly enable us to achieve this.
