This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My wonderful students come from the neighborhood around the school and are a delight to teach. We are a Title I school, and the boys and girls represent a diverse population. I love my position as the school librarian and enjoy seeing the classes once per week. I have worked with my students on using the online card catalogue to locate books. We have been using the online Encyclopedia Britannica and digital almanacs. We have limited technology in our library. It takes three to four weeks to get every student a turn at the computer to do our research activities.
My Project
I teach Kindergarten to 5th grade in a high poverty, inner city school district. Our school has a nice library that the students love to visit. We devote time during our library visits to do research. I incorporate current events and historical events into our research segment each week. Also, the children love when we visit websites that have live cameras that track animals. Last year we kept up with a pair of eagles that hatched in our state.
Unfortunately, our computer is very old and the websites take so long to load or the computer buffers continuously when trying to view the sites.
The students asked if the school could buy a new computer, but I explained about budget cuts. In this situation, not having an updated computer takes time away from our research activities and does not allow us to use our time together wisely.
Research skills are important to my students and lifelong learning takes place in our library daily.
The students' idea of buying a new computer would allow us to get more research projects done. A donation to our project would excite the children because they could continue to search the online card catalog, and find more information about historical and current events.
