Chromebook Collaboration to Spark Creative Questioning
My students need Chromebooks to help them research Green-roof technology, local plants and animals, and to access their google classroom and drives to collaborate on their work.

My Students
My students come from a large Title I school with limited resources for technology. Most of our families receive free lunch, and many of our students live doubled up with other families to afford living in Brooklyn while they struggle to ensure their children attend school and have a future. Some students are fortunate enough to attend after-school programs – however, these programs do not have access to technology to complete their research based work. Many children do not have access to internet research and apps at home, and only experience technology at school, which is presently limited.
Imagine a group of active learners, diverse in their home languages and family backgrounds, who gather themselves to collaborate, research, problem solve, and share their project based work.
They will form a circle around an exciting book or website, sharing information, gathering notes, and forming knowledge. These 5th grade girls and boys love to question, build, experiment, design and analyze but our resources only bring them so far.
My Project
Every student in the class will participate in a green roof design project, but this will have different elements worked on by different small groups. Groups of students will design an experiment and develop a green roof design with a group interested in animals or plants from the local area. Students can work in groups to research, share notes, and collaborate in the revision and creation of their work. They will be able to complete project based work on Google Classroom, save links, images, and text on their drive, and create presentations.
Presently, my students are cut off from important learning tools such as Google Classroom and Drive except for once a week.
This makes collaboration and note gathering more difficult. Many students limit their research topics because of a lack of reading material on the topic which could be resolved by having internet access. When they have access, they begin a process of questioning that drives their research, without it, they merely spend time trying to find information instead of really engaging with the information. That could be changed by our class having 5 Chromebooks which would allow group work everyday and make this project and other research more effective.
