This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Walk into my classroom and you will see 25 students noisily engaged in learning. Some students may be working together on a puzzle, building an obstacle course for robots, counting with math manipulatives, curled up with a book or working with me in a small group. As a visitor, these students look very similar, but as their teacher, I know which student may not have had supper last night, who stayed with older siblings while Mom worked a second job, whose parents are getting a divorce and which one is homeless and living in a shelter.
Our classroom is a family.
We may not begin the year that way but it is definitely how we end the year. We laugh, cry and celebrate with each other. We care. We love.
My Project
We returned to school Tuesday for the first time since Hurricane Florence. Many of my students have been displaced and are living with grandparents or other family members. This field trip to the Christmas show at Pirate Voyage will be the perfect outing to let my students escape from reality for a few hours.
Our school is located only 60 miles from Myrtle Beach but many of our students have never had the chance to experience the varied theater productions available there.
Pirates Voyage is offering schools special matinee performances of their Christmas show. The day will include a tour of the outdoor animal habitat, an educational presentation, the performance, and dinner. This trip will provide many writing opportunities when we return to our classroom.
Students will learn about the Pirates of the Carolinas while enjoying a world renown performance. Many of our families simply cannot afford the cost of this field trip, especially since they are dealing with unexpected expenses incurred by Hurricane Florence. This is the first field trip experience for our students. Please help us make it one to remember!
