My Project
At other schools in San Francisco, students sort their waste into trash, recycling, and food waste. At AFYAS, we take this a step further: students put fruit and veggie scraps in a bucket, which goes to the garden. On average, 10 gallons of apple cores, orange rinds, banana peels, and more, are collected every single day. These buckets are taken to the garden to be composted, aka turned back into soil.
Students play a fun and crucial role in composting our fruit and veggie scraps: chopping them into little pieces, so that the decomposers break them down faster.
These scraps are placed into our three-bin compost or in one of our three worm bins, where the decomposers break them down. Students get to see the entire compost cycle in action: how their leftover fruits and veggies get turned into nutrient-rich compost, which is then used to grow more fruits and veggies in the garden.
Learning about composting not only allows students to learn about decompostion and appreciate their food, but it is also a positive climate action. When food decomposes in landfills, it emits methane, a heat-trapping gas that traps 26% more heat than carbon dioxide, another heat-trapping gas. However, when food is properly composted, methane is not produced, and the compost can be used to grow new plants and improve soil health. In the overwhelming reality of climate disaster, composting is one way that students can take positive action to mitigate climate change.
However, we only have a few kid-sized shovels for chopping, which is one of students' favorite activities. Please support our garden and zero-waste efforts by donating shovels for students to participate in reducing food waste, improving soil health, and taking positive climate action.
