My students need their own copy of James and the Giant Peach to enjoy their first, rich novel study. The pencil sharpener and markers will supplement our engagement with the text.

"Choose to be Great" is a phrase that has often been taught to my students this year. They've discovered through their hard work that the choices they make in the classroom and in life help determine where they end up. The supplies from this project will be a great reward for a these eager learners.
My students face a plethora of challenges on a daily basis.
Our school is in a low-income, minority neighborhood and is rated as one of the worst schools in our city. They've been let down year after year by teachers that have passed them on without giving them the necessary tools to succeed. Education has traditionally been a source of frustration instead of a pathway to success for my students. However, my students have shown a tremendous amount of grit this year in overcoming these obstacles. We've grown together as a family through many struggles but even more successes. Despite their lives outside of school that would make many fear leaving their homes, I've discovered just how truly amazing each one of my students is. Their unique personalities and general curiosity and drive to succeed continually motivate me to provide them with the education that they fully deserve.
My students have rarely had the opportunity to hold, let alone read, and brand-new book. I cannot wait to see their eyes light up when I pass each student a fresh, crisp copy of a book that I thoroughly enjoyed myself as a fourth grader. In order to truly transform my students into lifelong readers and learners, opportunities such as holding a brand-new book and actively studying a novel such as "James and the Giant Peach" are critical. The pencil sharpener and dry erase markers are supplies that will supplement our engagement with the text. Everyone needs and deserves a proper writing tool, which the pencil sharpener will help supply. Additionally, we frequently use dry erase markers with miniature white boards in class to increase the fun of our learning activities.
My kids don't have much in terms of material belongings and they face challenges every day, inside and outside of school, that many people only see on television or read about in the paper.
However, each and every one of them is a vital, contributing member of our classroom. They are unbelievably amazing individuals that deserve every opportunity to learn and succeed in this world. I know in my heart that the funding of this project will make a lasting impact on the lives of these kids.
