Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from low income backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is located in the Northern section of the Bronx in NYC. Many of the children in our schools have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. The students on our teams vary. They range in disabilities from intellectual or emotional disturbance, to autism spectrum disorder and learning disabilities. 90% of our student body are African American or Latino. With a dedicated and caring staff we are able to provide a positive learning environment for children trying to get on the right path. Our basketball team has become a source of pride for not only the team members but the entire school. Although we don’t have a basketball court of our own (we are a small trailer school) we are able to use the basketball court of a bigger school around the corner at least twice a week for practice. The players look forward to the games and are learning good sportsmanship whether they win or lose.
My Project
Donations toward our goal of new uniforms will give the team a sense of pride. Although as a staff we try to instill good values while promoting good self-esteem our old uniforms are now over ten years old and damaged. Being able to take the court this season in lighter more comfortable apparel is surely a step in the right direction to not only winning but feeling good about our organization.
These kids just love playing the game they love!
We are trying to support them in any way possible, new uniforms aren't just wanted they are needed. Please help us widen a few smiles on our players faces and help the HAWKS soar into the 2018 basketball season and beyond!
