My students need a few more choices in my classroom. I use tables and encourage choice seating in independent time. Utilizing lap desks, stools, a colorful rug to lay on while working as well as storage for easy access to their supplies is encouraging!
I teach 3rd grade math and science to a group of children with varying exceptionalities. My group is a lovely mixture of girls and boys from different cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities. I have students with gifted abilities, deaf and hard of hearing, Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. Every year, the group looks very similar. Half of our school population is from low income families and on free lunch. I am a singer/actress and incorporate much of my talents into making my classroom fun! I make up silly songs to help them remember math terms and embarass myself willingly. I love my students and gain great pleasure in helping them grow into independent learners and humans.
My Project
Creating a bright, inviting comfortable environment is key to encouraging children to work independently. I painted my walls sunshine yellow. I have adjusted my lighting scheme to be calming and relaxing. All the fluorescent lights have been masked with blue sky covers.
I want to include a beautiful and inviting rug for the children to sit on during my lessons.
The lap desks will be used there and they may even lay down on the carpet to work on clipboards independently. The stools will be used at my small group table and add a pop of color to the industry standard blue school chairs.
The students will also enjoy personal cubbies with the storage shelves acting as a open desk. I encourage my students to take ownership of their learning and the classroom supplies. They will want to take care of themselves and their environment when they see how much effort has been put into the organization of it. The storage unit will house all the materials the students need access to during the day including pencils, erasers, paper, glue and scissors.
I am so excited to redesign my room. Donors Chose is the only way this can be made possible! Thank you in advance!
