Choose Love & Aloha; Choose Our Enclosed Butterfly Botanical Garden
Help me give my students fun, differentiated, place-based, immersive, and STEM engaging learning opportunities by identifying, making observations, investigating, and analyzing how butterflies can improve students' environmental attitudes to help them become environmental stewards on Oahu and globally.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
School gardens benefit the emotional disposition of students. School gardens with butterflies can improve students' emotional attitudes to help them become environmental stewards. These same emotional attitudes are aligned with our school's Choose Love and the four components of Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion in Action. Courage-Our students can gain a deeper insight of courage through working with their peers identifying native plants that attract butterflies found in Hawaii and around the world. Our Butterfly Kits will allow our students to engage in hands-on and immersive opportunities to observe, reflect, and analyze real-world data. Gratitude-Our students can gain a deeper insight of their responsibility (Kuleana) in alignment with sustainable. Our Hydro Garden will allow our students to engage in hands-on and immersive opportunities to explain phenomena in terms and concepts for their scientific hypothesizing and reasoning. Forgiveness- Our students can develop critical skillsets and growth mindsets of interpersonal relationships while initiating and engaging in discussions with peers, teachers, and stakeholders from investigating plant growth of plants grown within the enclosed greenhouse. Compassion in Action-Our students will gain a deeper insight of seedling propagation using our gardening resources (i.e., enclosed greenhouse, hydro garden planter, planter pots, etc.) Our STEM Butterfly Botanical Garden will allow our students to identify the life cycles of a butterfly and identify patterns of native butterflies found on Oahu and neighboring islands to butterflies around the world. The enclosed greenhouse and butterfly garden kits will allow students to explain the phenomena of butterfly habitats in a safe area as they make observations from butterfly-friendly plants grown in flowerpots. Students will learn viable lessons of sustainable composting produced using the compost tumbler and make connections to how important it is to recycle food waste to make fertilizer to feed plants that can harness butterflies for our botanical garden.
