This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although many of my students face far more challenges outside of school than any fourth grader should, I strive to ensure all of my students know my classroom is a safe place where they are able to express their feelings and share things that are happening in their life with myself or our school counselor. As a result of limited incomes of the families, approximately 86% of our students receive free or reduced rate lunch. I have heard many stories about not having basic needs met, about family members being ill and in the hospital, and other issues that impede their learning.

Too many students are so caught up in their own problems and issues that they struggle to empathize with other people.

In my class the first book we read is Wonder. Wonder is an amazing story that helps build empathy and teaches kids about "choosing kind". I believe all students make connections to things that happen in the story and are able to learn to consider how other people are feeling. They learn that words can hurt, nobody is perfect, and sometimes you just have to let things go.

My Project

When each of my students gets to have their own copy of the book in their hands as we are reading they will be more focused on increasing their ability to read. They will also be able to complete the learning activities in a timely manner without having to wait. It is very difficult for students to do activities that require the book if there are only a few copies available. By reading the book and completing the activities not only do they improve their reading comprehension, but they also learn how to empathize and think about how others feel. They learn to "choose kind".
