I teach in fifth grade in Queens, NY. My students are a diverse group of learners. Each student comes to my class with their own unique academic needs. This year fifth graders are learning in all different forms. Some students are working virtually, while others are in school five days a week.
Students this year have faced unprecedented challenges.
No matter their learning situation each and every one of my students perseveres and remains motivated to conquer any challenge.
My Project
This school year with students remote one way I built community was by reading Wonder by RJ Palacio. Given that students were remote I read Wonder as a read aloud, but looking forward to next school year I would love for each student to have their own copy of Wonder. It has been a long time since many students have been in a classroom holding a physical book in their hand. What better treat than to return to the classroom with their own copies of Wonder ready for them to dive right into.
As student return into the classroom next year I am looking to support my students social emotional growth and build a community.
Returning to the classroom will be a big adjustment for many students and it will be more important than ever to teach students that although we have all been apart, we are all in this together. I can think of no better way to do that than with a story that teaches us to always choose kind.
