Choose Kind: A Wonder-Inspired Wall of Compassion

Help me give my students paint, brushes, and canvas panels so they can express kindness and compassion through art while building a collaborative mural inspired by the book Wonder.

My Project

My students are learning to see the world not just with their eyes, but with their hearts. As we read Wonder by R.J. Palacio, we explore themes of empathy, kindness, and what it means to “choose kind.” To deepen this understanding, my students will create a collaborative mural made up of individual kindness art tiles—each inspired by a moment of compassion they've seen in the book, in others, or in themselves. The paint, brushes, and canvas panels I'm requesting will give students a hands-on way to reflect on what it means to step into someone else's shoes.

They’ll be challenged to visually represent the emotions, experiences, and growth of others—especially those who may be misunderstood or left out.

This helps students literally see through the eyes of another, using art to process emotional insight.

Students won’t stop at learning—they’ll take action. Through weekly kindness reflections and real-life observations of compassionate acts, students will translate their learning into meaningful contributions to our school community. Their artwork becomes a gift to others—a visual reminder that kindness matters.

I will measure success by the depth of student reflection, their ability to connect character experiences to real life, and the thoughtful symbolism in their artwork. Class discussions, empathy maps, and short written reflections will accompany their art, demonstrating growth in how they understand and show compassion.

With your support, this project will allow my students to build not only artistic skills but compassionate hearts—something we all need more of in the world.
