Choose, Explore, And Play!

My students need activities and games that are engaging and fun for their centers. Small groups enable me to plan instruction that really targets the needs of individual students.

My Students

It's hard to work on your own when you're six. Why not provide kids with a social medium that promotes engagement, excitement, and novelty? The answer: GAMES! They will be so motivated to play they won't realize how MUCH they are learning or how their focus allows the teacher to teach in small groups.

I teach a 1st/2nd grade combination class where 75% of my students speak English as a second language.

We are a Title I school in an urban area, but a residential neighborhood. This means funding is significantly lower than neighboring school districts in our city. I love my community, families, and students. They are committed to education and have extraordinary work ethics. They support our schools to the best of their ability. Unfortunately, the needs of my students (and our school's students) greatly exceed the financial resources of our community.

My Project

In small groups, students rotate through four centers. At each center, students engage in various activities that instruct, provide practice, extend, and allow exploration. The incorporation of learning games in math, science, and literacy instruction supports all of these goals. If students are able to work independently, it teaches responsibility, conflict-resolution, problem-solving, following directions, and content knowledge. While students play games during instructional times, learning games are so motivating, children seek them out during rainy day recesses and free time when they finish learning tasks. I cannot stress enough the wide range of skills in any classroom. All students will have access to games that are able to be differentiated to meet their learning needs (through modification of the format of play OR different tasks built into the game). Since students are working at various levels, small group instruction is a key of a successful primary classroom.

My students' excitement is a big motivator for me.

Often I will purchase games and allow them to add to the questions or create their own versions. This is an amazing way to synthesize their learning and show creativity. For many students, the ability to "play" with their friends makes coming to school a more positive experience. The happier a child is in the classroom, the more likely they are to build a positive rapport with their teacher; rapport is the basis to a positive learning experience.
