My Students

My students come to one of the most neglected elementary schools in the city, as it is located in a high poverty area, with very little parental involvement and constant security concerns. This neighborhood lies in a flood zone, often creating excessive absences during inclement weather conditions for students who walk to school.

This is a Title I school, in a military city, where 100% of our population receives free breakfasts, snacks and lunches every day.

Despite these obstacles in many of their lives, I am fortunate that they give me 110% each day. We greet each other with hugs every morning, work smart throughout the day and have a lot of fun learning. For that reason, these students deserve to feel like their education matters. Every year funds are more scarce and supplies are limited, however, the need to succeed is still necessary.

My Project

I am trying to create fun, learning activities that will allow students to move around the classroom freely. Some classroom rugs will make a huge difference in not only organizing my classroom's independent learning stations, but allow me to dispose of old rugs that have greatly surpassed their life expectancy.

Comfortable students, will make happy students!

Students will find these rugs much more inviting, clean and colorful which will entice them to participate in daily learning activities. I plan on incorporating them by using the alphabet rug to not only help with whole-group instruction; but, using the alphabet squares for students to practice phonological skills during small groups. The emoji rug is very relatable and will give students a place to go when they need to take a break. The slogan rug will be placed into our class library to remind everyone to have a great day. Finally, the game rug will be used during "Interactive Game Night" when families are invited into the classroom.
