Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our music classroom is a very active place starting with before school ensembles and clubs every day of the week, as well as classes throughout the day, and after school activities. Our students are enthusiastic and engaged in music making at every opportunity.

Our students are talented but often do not have opportunities or home support to allow those talents to be developed.

The music classroom in our school offers such opportunities both during regular class hours, as well as during before and after school special ensembles. We offer Orff, recorder, drama, choral, and instrumental groups. The students respond with great enthusiasm and high demand for membership. Many of the students participate in every group offered. Their ability to present themselves well during our productions, as well as other public speaking opportunities attests to the impact these opportunities have had in developing their skills and talents. Our hope is to have greater resources to accommodate their interests.

My Project

We currently have one set of Malmark Choir Chimes, but there are not enough instruments available to accommodate the number of students in our special ensembles or the general classroom. Every time we perform a piece, we must borrow a set from another source. As a result, we do not use the ones we have as often or as effectively as we would if we had enough instruments for full ensemble or class participation. Our students learn much more effectively when constantly engaged. Taking turns with the existing instruments means that each student receives only half of the potential rehearsal time.

The Choir Chimes will be used for both classroom and ensemble work.

This will be especially helpful next year when we add another grade level to our school. Ensemble work of this sort will add another dimension of challenge to the learning. Playing pieces on Choir Chimes requires students to work together and realize that they need the support of one another to be successful.
