My project has two goals: flexible seating for my students and daily snacks. My first graders are eager and energetic learners who are excited to come to school each day. Oftentimes this excitement is displayed in behaviors that can be disruptive to the rest of the classroom. Flexible seating provides choices for students for movement while maintaining focus on their assignment. My first graders come from low income families in a high poverty neighborhood. They face food insecurity on a daily basis. For many of the students the free breakfast and free lunch that they get at school each day is the most filling meals they get each day. I hope to be able to provide a snack each day for my students so that they go home with something extra in their stomach.
Studies have shown that it is hard to work when you are hungry and It's near impossible to focus on your work when you feel like you need to constantly move.
Flexible seating provides movement choices while still allowing students to focus on their work. A daily snack will helps students fill a need in their stomach.
