My Project
Research has proven that the use of flexible seating, play-based learning and soft starts each morning in classrooms is more effective than traditional desks, direct-instruction approaches or blasting the students with work right when they walk into our classrooms. Some studies have shown in addition to improving play skills and narrative language ability, flexible seating, play-based learning and student choice has a positive influence on students’ cooperation, collaboration and communication among each other.
Most students have not been able to play with others in a close proximity since COVID-19.
We have been instructing our students to have their personal space, face in the chromebook, etc. when they should be able to have those childhood interactions of playing with friends and communicating with others. Being able to give my students the opportunity to learn the peer communication skills will result in a positive attitude toward their learning.
Soft Starts and flexible seating in our classroom will encourage my students "work into" their day and have the choice of seating to make their learning the best it can be. Increased attentiveness and engagement with their own learning and with their peers is extremely important at this time in their lives.
Each item in this project is for reinforcing of concepts, completing STEAM activities with our whole class, or learning to cooperate and communicate with classmates. The bonus of this project is these items will be able to be utilized for years to come and with numerous students.
Some benefits for flexible seating can include increased engagement in lessons, intrinsic motivation, getting rid of excess energy, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving posture. Matthew T. Mahar wrote a paper which linked physical activity to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
