My students need different seating choices such as yoga balls and fun behavior incentives such as slime and bubbles to make the most of our time together!
This year, I started a new teaching chapter as an Intervention Specialist in a new school in a new district! My primary role is supporting students' individual needs to improve their academic outcomes through targeted, small group instruction. My students are energetic, eager kids who are ready to learn! I want to provide them with a rich, engaging and exciting classroom to keep them intrigued and loving school. I work with students from kindergarten through fifth grade, so their needs vary greatly.
Having a space that is inviting, where they feel safe to work on skills they may be lacking, is critical to maximizing my time with my groups.
I'm working to create a welcoming environment for some of our school's highest needs students.
My Project
These students are coming to work with me in a room that is not their own, oftentimes with internalized feelings of self-doubt or shame associated with reading difficulty. One of the first things I need to do is establish a relationship and ease their worries. In order for them to get the most out of our time together, my intervention room needs to feel like a space that belongs to the students. It needs to be inviting, engaging and fun. One way to achieve this is by providing a multitude of seating options and incentive prizes to best meet each child's preferred learning situation. I am very fortunate to have a wide variety of seating choices from prior Donors Choose grants but unfortunately, they are all sized for first and second graders.
Now that I have students ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade coming to my classroom, I need to ensure there are seating choices that suit all of the various sizes that walk through my door!
This project would add larger sized yoga balls and stools for my older students. My fourth and fifth graders need to feel like they belong, too! These seating options will make the intervention room a more exciting place to be; somewhere the students will recognize as a space designed for them.
This project wouldn't only deliver fun seating options, but it would also supply our classroom with incentive charts and prizes that will be used to help reinforce positive behavior during intervention time. With only thirty minutes to work with each group, it's important that we are on task and the students do their personal best. One way to help encourage this behavior is with the use of enticing prizes that will motivate students, such as slime and glow sticks!
