Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title one school and are mostly low-income, but what I love about them is they have never once complained about lack of money/items, etc. They have big hearts with an even bigger spirit and what truly makes them happy is being able to make choices for themselves and...honestly...being able to socialize.
One thing I have really focused on this year, with my almost middle schoolers, is the skills they need to survive and be successful in the real world.
By this I mean being able to use what they know about life so far and the practices we work on each day to solve problems for themselves, constantly work hard, and make the best decision possible for their current situation.
I believe my students take great pride in knowing that they have the ability to do whats right, and they are allowed that chance each and every day. They also have faith that they can do whatever they set their mind to, but they have to put in the hard work and the road is not always easy. Every single one of them deserves the world.
My Project
As I mentioned before when describing my students, they are at their full potential when they are able to make their own choices and feel in charge of their education. With this group of students (and many other students I have worked with) I have noticed that they thrive when they are able to choose where they sit and with whom they work (within reason). Because of this, we move around the room daily and find the most comfortable place for each student to work. Unfortunately we don't have too many options at the moment (a u-shapped table similar to their desks, a couple stools and a "fun college chair" that I purchased and they all race to first).
I can only image the joy on their faces and the fire in their souls when they see that their choices have been broadened and they are able to be comfortable and focused to their fullest capability.
I can see these options meeting every single one of my students needs, even the ones who prefer the comfort of their own desk by using a seat cushion. These seating options align with the idea of "flexible seating" which has been proven to derive student success.
Many of these students look forward to coming to school each day to be with their peers, work hard and escape to their second home. These accommodations, at the very least, would make it homier.
