My Students

My students are coming to me from all kinds of situations, most of which the majority of us have been lucky enough not to experience. My goal is to make them want to be there and to feel safe and ready to learn when they are there. Since my kids are middle schoolers, they are dealing with all the usual drama and hormones that all sixth graders are- on top of the violence, hunger, and poverty many of them experience every day. A large portion of the population is dealing with language barriers on top of all this. It takes a lot of work to get them to "buy in" and even more to keep them motivated, but that is why I get up every morning motivated to make a difference for at least one of them.

For many of my students, our school and my classroom is their "safe place" and/or their "happy place".

When they are with me, I want them to realize that where you come from does not decide where you are going. I want them to see their potential, take chances, set goals, and reach for the stars.

My Project

Every year I strive to make the school year better than the last. I take the kids' suggestions together with my own observations and run with it! Working in an urban setting, many students are not coming from the best environments and may not always have access to things they want, or even need. I want my classroom to be the place where they can believe they have a choice and that their opinion matters. I want them to know that they can achieve and that the violence, drugs, and poverty that seem to wait outside each of our doors is not where the world ends.

Any teacher will tell you that kids learn best when they are comfortable, involved, collaborative, and are given choices.

That's my goal this year.

The stools, lap desks, and laptop cart will allow for movement and collaboration, and for students to have a say in where they will learn best. Having options helps students feel a part of the learning process, thus becoming more invested and involved. The science kits are something that my students have asked for the last two years. They were really excited to learn about rocks and minerals but wished they could work with them more hands-on. Finally, a subscription to Flocabulary will allow my kiddos to explore topics in Math and Science through hip-hop and video, two major elements in most of their lives. It may seem silly to many, but I have seen how students "tune in" when you can grab their attention with something important to them. Music is one of those things, especially for kids growing up in the inner city. And pencils? Well, we go through A LOT and never have enough!

Thanks to anyone reading this and thanks for helping me help them!
