Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I-funded school in a city school district. In our public city school, many scholars are diverse, multiple language learners, and at-risk readers. Currently, the entire school population receives free breakfast and lunch. Many scholars are also from low-income households. However, they are warm, loving, and continually searching for ways to grow and become better each day. I am honored to teach such wonderful children.
I enjoy providing scholars a multitude of experiences to connect the curriculum and enhance their learning while promoting equitable access and allowing them to be creative and stimulate their curiosity.
My scholars are eager to learn, excel, and connect the curriculum in the school library media center. As the school librarian, I am able to reach every student in the school. I have been teaching for 19 years, and I take a great deal of pride in my work. I strive to make learning fun and engaging as I have been focusing on transdisciplinary learning to help scholars have authentic and powerful learning experiences.
My Project
We are seeking a virtual visitor, a chocolatier, to conduct a virtual chocolate tasting. The requested materials of Ethel's Chocolate samples will be used to teach school librarians how they can use food to build family engagement and community. Through hands on sampling and being lead by a professional in the food industry, school librarians will learn how to lead taste testing workshops and use food for education purposes.
Food brings people together and having school librarians learn how to use food for education, relationship building and building community will be transformative work for social and emotional learning.
Since school libraries are often the hub of the school, it would be so beneficial if school librarians can improve their practice with this professional development in order to touch more lives and improve learning outcomes. Thank you for your time, consideration and support of public school children and school libraries.
