Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The high school students I teach are predominantly Latino and black (African American, African, and the Carribean) in and around the New York City area. Approximately 13% of the student population is special education classified and 31% English language learners. Students come from varied home backgrounds of immigrant parents, single-parent homes, foster homes, and grandparents as primary care providers. Scholars are continually curious and eager to learn new things and explore anything technology related. They are warm, compassionate and enjoy tinkering and creating. Our scholars need more knowledge in order to be future-ready and globally competitive. They need to learn how to be leaders.
My Project
We are seeking a virtual visitor, an Ethel Chocolates' chocolatier, to conduct a virtual chocolate tasting. The requested materials of Ethel's chocolate samples will be used to teach school librarians how they can use food to build family engagement and community. Through hands-on sampling and being lead by a professional in the food industry, school librarians will learn how to lead taste testing workshops and use food for education purposes.
Food brings people together and having school librarians learn how to use food for education, relationship building and building community will be transformative work for social and emotional learning.
Since school libraries are often the hub of the school, it would be so beneficial if school librarians can improve their practice with this professional development in order to touch more lives and improve learning outcomes. They in turn will provide food workshops for healthy eating and choices to students and their families. This will benefit students and families as they will learn how to cook and eat right, as well as how to use mealtimes as conversation builders into their children's lives as school librarians strengthen the home to school connection. Thank you for your time, consideration and support of public school children and school libraries.
