Chocolate Reading

My students need books to increase literacy. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a great hook for books, art and literacy.

My Students

Dim the lights, curl up with a book, and a pillow or stuffed animal. We start the day reading together. Not every child has a parent reading to them at home, but we love reading together as a class.

My students are amazing and diverse.

My classroom is full this year with almost 30 students. Located in Alaska, we are very close to two military bases. We are a small neighborhood K-6 school with over half the students qualifying for free and reduced-priced breakfasts. My students work hard both at school and home, but many still struggle. Our school building is over 30 years old since the remodel but we are working hard to make it work for our kids. My classroom has gone away from desks as the business world has encouraged more collaboration. My students are expected to work together as a community in tables and groups.

My Project

As a class we will be reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together. While we don't always get through the books as fast as we could, they spark lots and lots of discussion. It is amazing when the whole class becomes involved in the book discussion because everyone has access to it. My students who are reading below grade level can have the same discussions with students at or above grade level. We read together. Of course, I have students who read ahead and I have students who are not able to read the book by themselves. That is the beauty of the entire class reading together. Social studies, math, and art. We are going to walk to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by one of our local theaters in December. We will discuss the origin of chocolate, especially with the Maya and Inca peoples. We will also try some chocolate experiments.

Creating lifelong learners is my greatest goal.

This gives everyone in the classroom a chance to be on the same level for discussions as well as for sharing ideas. Just because reading is challenge does not mean a child cannot be part of the discussion. A group reading and talking about the book opens up the students to explore so much more.
