My Students

Have you ever been so lost in a class and you don't know where to begin in the learning process? My students are struggling readers and writers: they are any where between one and three grade levels behind. We need a novel which will capture the imagination and keep us reading.

My students come from impoverished backgrounds.

They are often English learners and are below in their proficiency level. Our school is a new configuration, ranging from 5th grade all the way to 8th grade. For the most part we are a low performing and low-income school.

My Project

It is my goal to get my students reading and thinking critically about the world: this will enable them to achieve their dreams. I have noticed that my students achieve when they believe in themselves. Reading a novel about a boy who struggles and then eventually achieves his dream, is something that my students will relate to: and will inspire them. These novels are going to allow my struggling readers to access material which is at their reading level. Students read the text, trace plot development, analyze characters, and point of view: meeting all the California State Standards at their level. The audio version will help my English learners and my struggling readers achieve fluency in reading. Along with teaching literature standards, the unit has a variety on non-fiction texts to reinforce "reading of informational texts" as directed by the state of California.

We need to be inspired; and, we need to believe in order to achieve.

My hope is to teach literature that inspires students to reach for the stars. Which, is what my students need. This project will show that hard work, integrity, and hope can propel you into amazing things. They will also have a renewed love of reading and learning, because this unit is fun!
