My Students
Help me spend less time prepping and more time teaching so my students can learn in a hands-on way.
My first graders are full of energy and excited about learning.
Many of them come from parents who do not speak English as their first language. Some come from single parent homes or homes in which parents work more than one job. All receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and we are a Title 1 campus. Many of my students were also affected by Hurricane Harvey, leaving some of them with little or nothing at home. While these things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
My request is for a Cricut machine to use in my classroom for several purposes. The Cricut can be used to create individualized flash cards, writing prompts, bulletin boards and creative extension projects. I would use the machine to print alphabet letters in a variety of sizes and materials, which can be used in workstations, around the room, and at tables. I would also create images to match to letters by beginning, middle, or ending sounds, which I will use in Guided Reading groups as well as in my differentiated workstations such as Word Work. These letters and pictures would be used by my beginning readers for hands-on literacy games and activities. I find that I spend a lot of my free time creating resources by hand, tracing, cutting, and gluing. While I plan on continuing with these practices when needed, the use of a Cricut machine would greatly decrease the amount of time I spend prepping and allow me to focus on teaching and getting more hands-on with my students.
