Will you help support a budding artist or two? Who knows, maybe they'll be the next Rodin.
I am running an after school enrichment art program for students in grades K-4.
Our school is a Title I school and our arts programs have been significantly reduced due to budget cuts. It is hoped that this program will give students an opportunity to study many different types of clay models.
The supplies requested will give my students the opportunity to create masterpieces based on specific sculpture techniques. We will study the styles of European and Asian artists. We will also learn pottery techniques including Pinch Pottery, Coiling, and Molding, to create simple statues and pots.
At the end of the six week period, the students will have created three/four pieces to display in an art exhibit.
If this program is successful, we will strive to offer it as part of a regular art curriculum in our school.
My Project
Clay and materials such as sculpture tools, glazes, clear coatings and the 2 potters' wheels that I am requesting will be used to make several types of clay models over a six week program. We will try many different modeling techniques.
Our first introductory class will examine the different artistic styles of both European and Asian sculptures, e.g. works by European artists such as Picasso and Rodin.
Each subsequent week will cover a specific pottery technique, such as Pinch Pottery, and allow students to create their own work. Students will also learn who to create pots on a pottery wheel.
In addition to creating the sculptures, the students will also decorate, paint, and glaze their pieces.
Although this workshop will be short, it is my hope that the students will develop a love of sculpting and this will lead to further art classes.
While we try to teach basic art during the regular school day, monetary restrictions prevent us from having a full time art teacher.
This is the first time that our school is offering this type of program. This art program will expose these students to a medium that normally would not available to them.
