My Project
Food is one of the most interesting ways to learn about cultures, history, and human geography. This isn’t a new idea but has become more widespread, thanks to public personalities such as Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. Think of Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy, or Rick Bayless’ Mexico One Plate at a Time. Of course, these programs, and several associated books, target adult audiences. The question loomed: will similar learning resources ever target child audiences? The answer is yes!
Popular children’s book author Grace Lin merged food histories and Chinese folktales into her new book, Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods.
This wonderfully illustrated, full-color book is the perfect way for middle-grade students (ages 8-12) to be introduced to Chinese-American culture and the roots from which it has grown. Living near San Francisco’s Chinatown opens up a whole new world of culinary possibilities for our young eaters. This book is a foundation to eat upon.
