My Project

Flexible seating, storage, sensory supports and a "chill zone" are essential for creating a safe learning environment in my special education classroom. In my life-skills based special education classroom, I am hoping to create a dedicated "Chill Zone" for my students when they are feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated or just need to take a break to regulate emotions.

Feeling comfortable and regulated are essential before learning can occur, and these items will help my students get there.

Expanding our "Chill Zone" will allow my students to be in their best headspace for learning. Flexible seating, access to fidgets, alternative lighting, and privacy will allow them to feel comfortable and safe when they need to take time to relax. All students deserve to feel safe and supported in the classroom, and my hope is this space will allow that for my students.

Not only will the "Chill Zone" provide a physical space for them to go to when needed, it will help them develop social-emotional skills by identifying when they need to use the space, advocating for themselves and reflecting on feelings. These are invaluable skills that students will use throughout their lives.
