Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently have two roles at my school site. In the classroom, I teach a targeted group of “at promise” minority students to provide support, guidance, resources, and tutorials to ensure they pass all of their classes to be eligible to attend a university. I am also the intervention specialist, and I serve the entire student body and staff by providing support, specifically with discipline.
My goal is to provide students with resources and tools to succeed academically while supporting their social and emotional well-being.
One way in which I intend to do this is by implementing restorative practices and dialogue with the students I serve. My goal is to create a space that is non-threatening in which they can take a time out to decompress and relieve their anger, stress, and anxiety.
The furniture will aid in creating a space that will be non-threatening and allow for easy, genuine conversations and interactions to take place, primarily with students but also with staff and parents when needed. The giant coloring poster and diamond painting will provide students with an outlet to occupy themselves with a task to relax them and relieve some anxiety or anger.
I want students to have access to my space as needed. I want to be proactive, rather than reactive, in my approach to discipline, behavior, and social emotional issues. Having this space available to students will hopefully have a positive impact on their emotional well-being and allow them to thrive in school.
