Children's Garden of Learning

My students need 4 large, sturdy containers to create their own classroom garden.

My Students

Do you remember the excitement of planting your own garden as a child and watching it thrive? It is my hope that my students will realize the connection we have to our own environment through participating in lessons linked to our school garden.

Living in the suburbs of a city in northern California, my students attend a very diverse school.

It is very common to hear several languages in the hallways before the school bell rings for the day to begin. This award winning school inspires students to achieve their best by offering many experiences to enrich their learning experience. I feel having a school garden would help unify this diverse group of students.

My Project

Since the entire playground for my students is covered by blacktop, this presents an extra challenge in designing a school garden. By using these large galvanized tubs as raised garden beds, my students will be able to plant native plants and vegetables in their own school garden as an enrichment to their social studies and science curriculum. Through scientific observation, journal and creative writing, language arts and mathematics will also be enriched. Students will be able to enjoy the beauty of the garden as well as how their favorite vegetables are grown.

Today's child is so far removed from the environment she lives in.

By providing my students this opportunity to be involved in beautifying their own school campus and growing some of their own food, it is my hope that I am also helping them to became stewards of their environment. Please help me bring the joy of gardening to my students as well as those in all of the classrooms at my school.
