Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher at an elementary school that ranges from pre-k to fifth grade. I work in a barrier-free school. Barrier-free means that my school can accommodate all children, regardless of what handicap they might have. Children in wheelchairs and with walkers go to school along side their peers. It's a wonderful thing to see. It's the way it should be.

At the beginning of the school year, I asked my students how many had a dictionary at home. Only about 5 raised their hands, and some of my students didn't even know what a dictionary was. This deeply saddened me. I don't know how I made it through elementary school myself without a dictionary.

In order to give every child in my class the opportunity to own their own thick, hardcover dictionary that is full of all of the information and facts that I thrived on as a child, I have asked for 25 hardcover Merriam-Webster children's dictionaries. To ensure that they are properly using them and to get the most out of them, I will give weekly vocabulary assignments from the dictionary. I did this with a class that I had a few years ago and it worked wonderfully. It increased their vocabulary base without them even knowing it! They viewed any work that they did with their dictionaries as a special treat because we were the only class who had them.

Myself, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to receive these dictionaries. Once the dictionaries are placed in my students hands, the possibilities are endless!
