My Project

I am a literacy specialist at a Title I school. Our school is made up of a wide variety of students who are low-income, immigrants, refugees and/or caught in the cycle of generational poverty. We provide them with their school supplies, breakfast, lunch and a fruit/veggie snack. They come ready and eager to learn each day. Teaching them to read is the ticket to their future. They are not only college bound, but life bound and I want them to do that with the ability to read.

Science tells us that 95% of people can learn to read, my goal is 100% for our school!

These books will help me teach some basic phonics skills in a way that is different and exciting. I want students (and teachers) to know how their brain learns to read. Most students need at least 8 exposures before understanding and remembering a concept or even a word. These books will allow me and their teachers to provide a different way for them to grasp and understand the topic. Often times students need things explained in a different way, these books will allow us to provide read-alouds, pictures and conversation to help concrete these topics in their memory.

My goal with this project is to start a library of children's books and teacher professional books aimed at explaining some reading and phonics concepts. I will use these books in classrooms I teach in, however, I also want my staff to have access to them also. Not only teachers, but interventionists, multi-lingual, resource room and paras will be able to borrow them to use with the students they work with also.
