My students are adorable high functioning children with autism in grades 1 to 3. They are in preparation to move on to a less restrictive environment!
My students are preparing to move on to a less restrictive environment and are still struggling with reading comprehension. We lack appropriately leveled materials to teach comprehension strategies to students. The materials we have are either too hard or too easy for students. They are more focused on decoding words than comprehending text.
A leveled library for grades 1 to 3 would give my students the opportunity to really read text on their individualized levels. By reading appropriate text, I will be better able to teach students the strategies they need to comprehend and infer meaning from what they have read.
Increases in their reading comprehension will better prepare them for the next challenge of a less restrictive environment and a more "typical" lifestyle.
