Children Read Non-fiction with National Geographic for Kids

My students need grade level, non-fiction resources. I can't think of a funner way for our students to read a non-fiction resource together.

My Students

Children love to read about different types of animals. What better way to meet the new national core standards than by reading National Geographic for Kids? The bright, vivid pictures and interesting stories will help increase my first graders' comprehension.

My class is a PK-3rd grade early learning center.

My class has an 80% free and reduced lunch rate and do not have the access to transportation to go to the library. Therefore school is the best place my children have to see and read non-fiction materials. I want to be able to provide these opportunities to my students with a fun and current magazine.

My Project

Students in my class come to school for structure and opportunities. The opportunities I provide to my students will help them improve their reading fluency and reading comprehension skills. If students cannot read and understand what he or she is reading they will struggle with many different subjects. Eventually, there will be an educational gap that will frustrate my students and make them drop out. I want my students to know that as their teacher, I will try my very best to provide them the same fun opportunities to become great fluent readers with excellent comprehension because the stories were interesting and fun.

This project is important because all children should be on the same playing field and have the opportunity to have access to bright, interesting, non-fiction reading material.

National Geographic for Kids will allow the class to read together and work on comprehension strategies and thinking maps to help the children improve reading comprehension.
