This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a New York City teacher in a low income high need school district. I am teaching 5th grade this coming year and my students are in desperate need of quality literature. This coming school year our school funds are being reallocated from the previous year. My students will suffer the consequences by not having vocabulary enriched books. The books that the students will be forced to use are old, worn, and falling apart.
This coming school year almost half of my students will be second language learners so they are also in need of books on tape. This will help them to practice the English language independently as well as involve them in the same literature as the rest of the class. If the students receive these books it will be a tremendous benefit for them.
They will have the chance to read quality and classic literature by some of the most well-known children's authors that otherwise they will not have the opportunity to read such as Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and Roald Dahl. Some of the books I would like my students to have an opportunity to read are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Blubber, Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Island of the Blue Dolphins, just to name a few.
Quality literature should be read and shared by all children. I know that if my students had these books they would fall in love with reading the way I did when I read these books as a child. Please help my students to become life long readers.
