As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges. The school I work at has the highest poverty rate in the county. Many families are unable to provide their students with extra experiences. Many students have not had a chance to experience life outside of their community.
Develop a passion for learning, if you do you will never cease to grow.
These students have the warmest hearts, and deserve an environment where learning is fun and exciting. I grew up on a farm, and have had so many experiences with animals. I want my students to experience a part of that. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to create a project in my classroom where each spring they are able to experience something they would not normally be a part of.
I would like to hatch baby chicks each year in the spring. There is a 4-H embryology program that takes place throughout our county, but in order to participate I need to have an incubator. I would like to get funds to purchase an incubator for each of my classes to experience in the Spring.
Students will be watching the embryology of a chick. Many of these students have not gotten the luxury of taking a trip outside of their community. The have never seen animals such as goats, chickens, and pigs in a real life situation. Getting my students to understand what the word agriculture consists of in necessary for Virginia Studies. I want them to experience something that they would not otherwise be exposed to in my classroom.
The wonderful thing about this project is that the incubator can be reused each Spring for new classes to experience embryology.
Also, other students from other classes can also come to visit.
