Chickens, Chickens - One flew over the Chicken Coop
Help me give my students an opportunity to raise chickens in the city! Cluck Cluck medically fragile students who cannot access the community will get a chance to experience hands on work every day.
The students in my class are medically fragile and have difficulty in most areas, they cannot access the environment and are mostly stuck in their classroom. Since they can't leave the building to go to a work site, (due to medical issues) we decided to build a worksite for them outside our school building, in the heart of the city. Most of the students are in wheelchairs and some are tube fed with limited motor control. The materials in this project will allow students to raise chickens, feed the chickens through plants they grow themselves, learn how to harvest and distribute eggs. Items received will also allow students to learn about weather and climate change as we explore the benefits of locally sourced food. Students in my class learn best when they participate in hands on activities but lack the ability to navigate in their environment. We have some items but there is much more needed equipment.
Students need to experience all the varied tasks related to raising chickens which will teach them a skills from empathy to math!
By raising chicks they will be able to see, touch and smell new and exciting experiences. Students who are blind, students with limited vision, students who cannot more their bodies but can use their eyes, students who are in constant pain; will truly engage with novel exposures expanding their world. The possibilities are limitless when barriers are removed. My goal is for each student to have new exposures and experiences enabling their lives to expand past the same old routine they encounter day in and day out every year. Skills will increase in communication, socialization, following directions, vocational and transition skills, math, the list is endless.
