My Project

For the past eleven years, my students and I successfully hatched chickens every spring!

Every year my second-grade students eagerly anticipate the arrival of their fluffy, feathered companions, little chicks.

With two incubators gently humming in the corner, our classroom becomes a haven for learning about the delicate cycle of life. We have hatched 12 chicks last year! From carefully monitoring temperature and humidity levels for twenty-one days to witnessing the first cracks in the eggshells, my students are intimately involved in every stage of the hatching process. As the chicks emerge, their tiny chirps fill the room with excitement and wonder, capturing the hearts of each student.

Furthermore, my students take on the responsibility of nurturing the chicks, learning valuable lessons in empathy, patience, and teamwork. From feeding and watering to providing a safe and cozy environment, the students develop a deep sense of connection with their feathered friends. Through this hands-on experience, they gain a newfound appreciation for the natural world and cultivate a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the creatures with whom they share the planet.

Since spring is here, I wish my students could have a small brooder box to keep chicks warm and a chick feeder set to keep clean food and water for them. Thank you for your consideration!
