Cheyenne Again: Learning Through Historical Fiction!

My students need a class set of the Native American story, "Cheyenne Again," to read as a class, in groups, and individually.

My Students

My students take a look at the textbook anthology they receive at the beginning of the year and immediately view reading as a tedious chore. My students receive their own paperback copy of an intriguing third grade novel, and reading just got real!

My students are in third grade.

Their ages range from 8 to 10 years old. Our school is located in a low-income, high-crime, inner city neighborhood in northern California. Most of my students come from low income backgrounds and cannot afford many school day necessities. Many of my students have volatile home lives, yet come to school every day with a smile, ready to learn!

My Project

I am requesting 20 copies of the novel, Cheyenne Again, for my students to kick off the new school year! With young readers, it is important to constantly change up the reading program. My students will love the opportunity to read aloud and discuss what they read with their peers. A class set of of the novel, Cheyenne Again, will also encourage teamwork and increase reader confidence. Many of my students do not have books to read at home and any additions to our class library mean I can lend or sometimes give students books to read and keep at home.

My students are always excited to add books to our class library.

I know that starting the new school year with new books for the whole class to read together will mean the world to them! In our community, teamwork is essential. A literary adventure for the whole class will encourage that teamwork and help foster a lifelong love of reading.
