Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Science Cluster teacher in a Title One School. I am always trying to find different ways to make our units in Science more interesting. This particular proposal will be used for my fifth grade students. I teach three sections of fifth grade regular education and one self-contained fifth grade class. Our longest unit in fifth grade is focused on health and nutrition.
My students are inner-city kids who often buy food on their way to and from school. Since there is rarely an adult present while they are buying; they do not always, if ever make the best food choices nutritionally. We have been studying the Food Pyramid and it is evident to me that my students rarely get in all of the guidelines set forth by the government.
One of the main culprits for this is the easy access and inexpensive price of fast food. My students eat at a fast food restaurant at least once per week and often up to once per day. Often the stop at the fast food joint isn't for a meal, but as for a snack.
I think that one of the best ways to help reduce the obesity epidemic in the inner-city is through education. My students do not know what is in their Happy Meal, if they did, maybe they would stop and think before opting to buy food at a fast food restaurant, or at least limit their consumption of this type of food.
One way that I can facilitate this is by having a kid-friendly book that shares what is up with fast food. I read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser several years back and have not eaten fast food since. Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson have written a kid-friendly version of this book called Chew on This: Everything You Did Not Want to Know about Fast Food. I would like to have 32 copies of this book so I can share it with my fifth graders one class at a time.
I don't know if my students are at an age where they can completely say no to fast food, but knowledge is power and if it limits their consumption, I will be happy with that. Please give my fifth-graders some "food for thought" by funding this proposal. It will make a big difference for them! Thank you.
