My Students

What it would be like if you couldn't communicate? How would you make friends? How would you tell people about the things that are important to you? My students with autism want to make friends with their peers, but don't have a way to share information about themselves.

My students range from kindergarten through second grade.

All of them have moderate to severe autism, and all have delayed communication. Several of them are completely nonverbal, but clearly want to communicate and are able to do so using a variety of modalities. Unfortunately, these ways of communicating are not always immediately functional when used with their same-age peers who may not be familiar with gestured communication or sign language, or may not understand what my students are trying to communicate when they use a picture exchange system. By giving my students talking photo albums to share with their peers as well as with other adults on campus, I hope to give them a way to introduce themselves and start conversations.

My Project

Most elementary students are fascinated by technology and understand photographs. By giving my nonverbal students, or students with very limited ability to communicate, talking photo albums, we are giving them a very concrete and high interest way to engage with their same-aged peers. During social times such as lunch and recess, my students would be able to share their photo albums with their peers, inviting the other children to engage with them in a very concrete and simple way.

Friends can be life-changing for my students with autism, who often lack a functional way to initiate communication with other children their age.

By equipping them with a high-interest tool to start conversations and engage with their peers, we will help them build their self-worth as well as their communication and social skills.
