My students need to learn to play chess and develop the critical thinking strategies associated with this intellectual game. They need lessons with a chess master.
Checkmate! Easier said than done, and the students want to be able to say those elusive words. An after school chess program is just the ticket to develop thinking strategies in an engaging activity. A chess master guiding us to develop championship skills is what we hope to bring to our school.
Our New York City public school is located in the borough of Queens, one of the most diverse in the country.
We serve an international school community where chess looms large and is highly respected as a thinking game. If we are to stress academic rigor, achievement and excellence, then we have an obligation to bring those activities to our school that foster that level of excellence. Enter chess!
Our families are real chess enthusiasts and that speaks to the global perspective of the students we serve. The school is comprised of many first generation Americans and the many languages and cultures represented are a microcosm of our great city. The school reflects a diversity that supports those activities that can contribute to student engagement, and chess is one of those popular activities that can make that contribution.
My Project
We are hoping to have a Grand Master of chess visit as part of our after school chess program so that the students have an opportunity to learn from the very best. Having a chess master guide and direct our students with successful playing strategies takes our chess program to whole new level. We are serious about this game, and so are our parents.
Having an expert direct us in chess adds gravitas to our program and we know how popular it will be once word gets out that a chess master is visiting for 8 sessions to develop our students' chess skills. We are confident that if this proposal is funded, we will have a full house of aspiring chess masters eager to absorb the nuances and strategies of the game.
What better way to learn than from the best? Absorbed in thought charting the next move on the chess board is the level of engagement we want to foster among our children.
Having an expert teach the students how to best play the game is exciting.
Knowing that these skills transfer to the academic environment with concentration, problem solving, critical thinking, and just plain fun make this after school program a must. Hosting a prestigious chess master sends the message that only the best will do for our students. Pricey perhaps, but how does one put a price on acquiring this level of excellence? Meet you on the chess board, and bring the king.
