This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My elementary school is a gem of a school located in Atlanta.

Most of our 1,100 students (PreK-5) are children of immigrants or immigrants themselves.

Their primary language spoken at home is Spanish. Many of our students arrive at our school never having spoken English at home. Though some have many economic and language hurdles to overcome, they are some of the most curious, insightful, and caring students I have ever encountered. I am amazed on a daily basis of how ingenuous they are!

My Project

Our rapidly-growing Chess Club is in desperate need of some tournament-style chess sets. Our new chess sets will enable our students to practice for the entire Chess Club time, instead of having to share and miss out on opportune practice time.

Our goal in Chess Club is to inspire critical thinkers, build community with our school, and prepare them for a competitive and academically challenging world.

However, with only 6 sets for over 35 students, it's hard to give them the exposure and practice that they all need. With ten new sets, our students will be ready for not only their annual County-wide Competition, but also for a future of critical thinking!
